BUILDING RESILIENCE

A practical, actor-led workshop exploring how students respond to challenge, failure and pressure

Building Resilience is a fast-paced, supportive workshop that explores how students respond to challenge, failure and uncertainty.

Through a series of practical exercises, group challenges and reflective tasks, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone, take risks and experiment with new approaches in a safe, structured environment.

Drawing on techniques from performance training, the session focuses on adaptability, mindset and collaboration, giving students opportunities to practise, reflect and reframe their response to setbacks. Students begin to see failure not as something to avoid, but as a valuable part of learning, growth and creative problem-solving.

Designed for secondary students, this workshop can be tailored for different year groups, abilities and school contexts.

It works particularly well for:

  • PSHE and personal development

  • resilience and wellbeing programmes

  • transition points and change (e.g. Year 6–7, KS3–KS4)

  • students building confidence and coping strategies

  • enrichment and character education

  • team-building and group cohesion

  • students navigating pressure, exams or uncertainty

WHAT STUDENTS TAKE AWAY

Students leave the session with greater awareness of how they respond to challenge, and a set of practical strategies they can begin to apply when facing pressure, setbacks or uncertainty.

During the workshop, students:

  • explore different responses to failure and challenge, and how these affect behaviour and mindset

  • practise adapting to changing situations, particularly when things don’t go to plan

  • experience taking risks in a safe, supported environment

  • develop awareness of how thoughts and attitudes influence outcomes

  • experiment with strategies for managing nerves and uncertainty

  • build confidence working collaboratively under pressure

  • reflect on personal habits, including perfectionism, avoidance or fear of failure

  • explore how to reframe setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth

  • engage in problem-solving tasks that require flexibility, communication and teamwork

  • leave with practical techniques and language to support resilience beyond the session

  • Students explore what we mean by resilience, including how we experience failure, rejection and challenge, and why these are a natural part of learning and growth.

  • Through discussion and activities, students consider how different attitudes — including fixed and growth mindsets — shape how we respond to setbacks.

  • Students explore practical strategies for responding to pressure, including techniques to manage anxiety and stay grounded in challenging situations.

  • Through structured group challenges, students practise thinking flexibly, adapting strategies and responding to changing conditions.

  • The workshop encourages students to step outside their comfort zone, take creative risks and build confidence through supported challenge.

  • Students work together to navigate tasks, reflecting on communication, leadership, listening and how group dynamics shift under pressure.

The content is adapted to suit the age and needs of the group, but typically includes:

Engaging, dynamic and extremely well delivered. Students were challenged in the right way and left with a real sense of achievement.”
